The Magners League Connotations – How the Welsh Regions are Effected

There seems to be a lot of confusion over how the Welsh regions are effected by the last day of the season and the various permutations. A similar amount of confusion as I have over whether I should be using effected or affected (no matter how many times I learn it I never get it right).

So to try help you out with the rugby table problems and how they relate to the Welsh regions and the play offs I thought a quick ‘cheat sheet’ would be useful.

It is important to bear in mind two things with regards the table as it stands.

1) If on equal points two teams will be ranked by the amount of wins they have
2) If still equal they are then ranked on points difference

those are the rules according to the Magners League website (but they have form of changing them when they feel like so don’t hold your breath).

Welsh Regions

The Magners League as its stands looks something like this…

The games involving Welsh regions are

The Scarlets vs Cardiff Blues
Dragons vs Ulster
Aironi vs Ospreys

Which can lead to some very interesting results, with all 4 regions having a part to play.

The Possibilities

* If the Blues win they will go into the play offs – even if the Ospreys get a 5 point win they will be on equal points, and the ML then goes on number of wins. Blues are on 13, Ospreys 11

* If the Blues lose and the Ospreys win then the Ospreys will go through to the play offs

* If both the Blues and the Ospreys lose the Scarlets will go through to the play offs

* IF the Dragons win and stop Ulster getting a losing BP AND the Ospreys get a 5 pointer away AND the Blues win then both the Ospreys and the Blues can qualify

Making everything rather tight at the top. As an Ospreys fan I am certainly sweating it…can’t remember last time I supported the Scarlets vs another Welsh side!
