Morgan Stoddart Called up to Welsh Squad

Morgan Stoddart, the Llanelli Scarlets full back, has been called up to the Welsh Autumn internationals squad following the withdrawal of fellow Scarlets back 3 member Mark Jones due to a knee injury.

Morgan Stoddart has very little game time following injury, has no form and, as far as I can see, the only reason for calling him up is he has played for Wales before (last game in 2008 vs Canada). A view Robert Holwey seems to be supporting

“Morgan is an intelligent attacking player who will provide cover for us across the back three,” said Wales assistant coach Rob Howley.

“He is a player we know very well and just as importantly he knows our squad environment very well and should be able to slot into things fairly quickly.”

Now I know time is short for players to slip in and all, but Wales have 3 full backs playing some excellent rugby. Barry Davies has been superb for the Ospreys, starting off exactly in the sort of form that would suggest cover for Lee Byrne at international level as well as regional. Dan Evans toured in the summer with Wales and has been in top form for the Scarlets and Jason tovey is an extremely talented footballer who can play 10 and 15, and has been doing very well there.

So obviously the right call is a Llanelli Scarlets fullback who has, quite frankly, had a number of defensive issues at the top level of the game.

I have no idea why on Earth they have chosen Stoddart, surely this was the perfect opportunity to give some youngsters some experience?
