Gareth Owen to Miss the Season Injured

The Ospreys have confirmed that talented young utility back Gareth Owen will be unlikely to feature in the 2011/12 season after injuring his leg and undergoing surgery.

Following on from our hunting of information yesterday it seems that Gareth Owen will miss the season with injury.  This is a major blow to both the Ospreys and Owen, who would have been hoping he would step up into the large hole being left by James Hook’s departure.

He is a very talented youngster with all the skills needed to make it at the top, even if his decision making was questionable.  Many people hoped that a run of games would allow him to develop that side of his game.  Certainly he is one of teh few creative backs left in the Ospreys with the departures of Henson and Hook in recent years.

Here’s what the Ospreys had to say on the matter

Gareth Owen could miss the entire 2011/12 campaign after suffering what has been described as a “substantial injury” in training.

The 22-year old Maesteg born back, who has 50 appearances for the Ospreys under his belt, underwent surgery this week and faces another operation at a later date.

Head Physio Chris Towers explained:

“Gareth underwent surgery on Thursday after he suffered a knee injury in training, It was a bit of a freak accident resulting in him twisting his knee, sustaining a substantial injury. As a result of this he will, in all likelihood, be out of action for the whole of the 2011/12 season.

“Thursday’s operation was the first part of what will be a two stage surgical procedure to repair the damage and then reconstruct the cruciate ligament. At this stage we are unable to say anything more, but will update on his progress as and when we can.”

We had hoped that we had got it wrong and that the injury was minor.  I am sure you will join us in wishing Owen a speedy recovery and hope that we will see him back in an Ospreys short soon.
