Darren Daniel Released by Scarlets

Darren Daniel

The Scarlets have released the Llanelli academy and Llanelli RFC product Darren Daniel.

Darren Daniel, 23, had scored 21 tries in 49 starts for the region – but had struggled for competitive games recently, despite a run of injuries on the wing. He was behind even converted scrum halves in the pecking order – managing just 2 competitive starts last season, 1 in the Heineken Cup, one in the LV= cup.

Carmarthen Quins have moved swiftly to snap up the rapid 5’11″ winger. Presumably this is more of the cost cutting that have seen Jamie Corsi and Rob Higget released.

This release has a number of Llanelli Scarlets fans disappointed – many of whom were suggesting that Darren Daniel could well have been a Welsh starter just a couple of years ago.

Presumably with him playing rugby at Carmarthen Quins the Llanelli Scarlets will still have the option of calling him up (though ignoring the fallacy of ‘feeder clubs’ so to can any region), so are keeping him in their back pocket as it were whilst not having to pay his wages.

It certainly suggest rumours that Mark Jones is about to retire are unfounded as the West Wales region will again be struggling for numbers on the wing as it is.
