6 Nations Team of the Tournament? Not Likely…

Rugby Nick takes a look at the 6 Nations and who should, and shouldn’t, be part of the ‘team of the tournament’.

So just over 1 week on from that God awful performance in Paris I can finally bring myself to think about rugby again (though Welsh Rugby is another matter). The only plus side I am taking from that day is that I think the day’s drinking has finally finished off my liver so I should be able to qualify for disability allowances…

But as for the rugby, the less said the better. Which is true of most of the 6 Nations if I am honest. A cracking Irish performance vs England, 50 mins of England vs an Italy that didn’t show up, and the joy of seeing Italy beat France. That’s the highlights done and dusted…

6 Nations Team of the Tournament

Any of this lot on my team? No thanks

Which is why I am not bothering with a team of the tournament. I have seen other sites like therugbybog.co.uk and bloodandmud.com have put them together, and I love a good argument as much as the next guy, and these teams always give good arguments. But frankly I was stumped.

Wondering why? Try picking a good 12, for example. The best I can think of was Lamont, and he spent just about the whole time at 12 rushing up too fast leaving holes behind him defensively. JD2 did alright, and, um. Yeah.

Backrow was competitive. 10 really wasn’t. And it keeps going like that across the positions. If I was looking to pick the best team of the tournament for a match vs a Southern Hemisphere team I would probably just concede the game on the spot and not bother.

Yes this sounds a little over the top but I genuinely believe we just watched what was probably the worst 6 Nations I can remember, and there have been some pretty poor ones. England were the best team and so deserved their win, but they weren’t actually any good.

We were 4th, which is normal. And we were crap, which is also normal. Maybe sometime soon someone in the Wales set up will eventually realise people have worked out our attacking plans and now we look about as sharp as a banana. One that has been mushed up and put on porridge.

So no team of the tournament from me. Simply a well done Ireland on putting in a performance that reminded us what quality rugby actually looks like. Nice to have one team do it at least once this championship.

What do you think?  Maybe you think there is actually a worthwhile team to be made from this mess?  Use the comments below or our Welsh rugby forum to join in the debate
