What Would Your Player of the Year List be? – Open Thread
So the IRB world player of the year short list has been announced, and what a joke it is. Tom Croft is on there, Francois Steyn is, as a South African fan pointed out, not even the best Steyn in South Africa and, good as his recent form has been, Richie McCaw spent half the season injured.
So it is safe to say that I don’t agree with the list.
But this thread isn’t about me. It is a first of what I will be calling ‘open threads’. The idea here is not for me to put my opinion on you within the article but to see what you think.
So let me ask – who do you think shuld have been on that list that wasn’t? or maybe you want to put together an entire new list. Either way use the comments below to let us know!

Yup, total joke, I don’t think anyone in a black shirt has really done anything player of the year-worth, likewise I don’t think anyone in an England shirt has either, Croft has a decent Lions tour and a decent club season, end of. Steyn hit a few long range penalties and apparently that’s enough to justify his inclusion at the expense of plenty of others why?
My seven would be:
Fourie du Preez
Brian O’Driscoll
Jamie Roberts
Matt Giteau
Gethin Jenkins
Victor Matfield
Jamie Heaslip
I agree with that list a lot. From a Welsh perspective Roberts was inspirationsal in the 6 Nations and especially the Lions tour, Gethin has been amongst the best players, never mind just props, in the world for a few years now.
Not sure about heaslip as I thought he was poor for the Lions, and Phillips outclassed du Preez on that tour too, so not sure about du preez.
need to think about my own list but would be roughly similar to that
Tom bloody Croft? Why aren’t I on that bloody list
I agree Gareth, that you aren’t on the list is a terrible disgrace that should be changed at the earliest opportunity.
Hell someone managed to talk Croft onto the list so i don’t see why not!
My player of the year would be BOD
On the Lions tour despite what Roberts did to carve open a gap BOD added that touch of brilliance that is very rarely seen in an Outside Centre. Has there been a better outside centre over the last 8 years? No chance!! Give him what he deserves!
