Wales are set to miss their record try scorer Shane Williams for the potentially championship deciding clash vs France this weekend after the winger picked up an injury.
Welsh winger Shane Williams has been ruled out of the final 6 Nations clash. Knee ligament damage means that he will be out of rugby for the next 6 to 8 weeks. Either Morgan Stoddart or George North is expected to replace him.
With Shane Williams retiring from International Rugby at the end of the World Cup in October this brings down his 6 Nations career in a disappointing anti-climax. He was hoping for 2 tries to be able to draw level with the top ever try scorers in the championship, which included Brian O’Driscoll after his try vs Wales on the weekend.
With Wales still holding out mathematical hope of winning the 6 Nations championship, should England lose to Ireland and Wales win by enough points, they really needed their record try scorer firing on all cylinders – especially with so few of the backline able to create much of anything when it comes to tries.
“Shane will be out of action for a period of six to eight weeks after sustaining damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the match at the weekend,” said Wales’ medical manager Prav Mathema.
“Thankfully there is no need for surgical intervention and he will now undergo a period of rehabilitation which will see him return to full fitness.”
