Sean Holley and Jon Humphries Given New Contracts

Despite overwhelming displeasure from fans it seems that Sean Holley and Jon Humphries have been given new contracts by the Ospreys.

Many fans, myself included, feel that the two of them have failed repeatedly to get the best out of their talented players.  But it seems rather than being answerable for their failure as coaches it has been decided that the focus within the region is wrong, and so players have been offloaded and the attitude changed, but with the coaches staying the same, and now getting rewarded according to the South Wales Evening Post.

So the question becomes – when do the coaches become answerable for their failures?  Whilst we should lay a certain amount of blame with players that fail to perform when do we also admit that the preparation and tactics have failed, and that coaches should be looking to get the best out fo players – not simply blame them if and when things go wrong.

Should Sean Holley and Jon Humphries have been given new contracts?

It has been years since Lynn Jones was let go by the Ospreys, a move popular with fans at the time.  But at the same time many recognised it was not just Lynn that had taken the region as far as he could, but those working under him.  They have, in my mind, showed exactly the limitations we believed they had then, over and over again.

There is often too much finger pointing in sport, and we don’t like so openly criticising people, even if we don’t think highly of them.  But there has to be a time when coaches start becoming responsible for failures.  I fear that at the Ospreys there seems to be a lack of any real accountability.

Who do we blame for failures?  The Welsh squad and the players it seems.  But these have repeatedly been the most talented players that Wales have to offer, and in some cases the world.  But now it seems that we have decided it is having too many good players that is to blame for our failure to play cohesive, quality rugby and so have brought in ageing journeymen.

A quick look at the Ospreys ‘ins and outs’ says a lot with regards talent.  How it has been decided it must be the players not the coaches is beyond me.
