Invictus Preview – THE Rugby Movie
Moving on from what I am assured is a big steaming pile of dog waste, Forever Strong, we have a REAL rugby movie being released – Invictus, and man does it have some big names in it.
It is the story of the South Africa World Cup told from the perspective of Nelson Mandela (played by Morgan Freeman) and Francois Pienaar (played, oddly, by Matt Damon). I haven’t see it yet, only the trailer below, but I have to say i am excited by it.
Have to admit some confusion over Matt Damon being big enough to play backrow, and from what I can see the accents seem a tad interesting – but at least it is not some highschool crap. It looks inspiring.
Wonder who is playin Chester Williams though, or if he is in it at all, couldn’t see any sign of a black player in that South African squad, and it does look like it might spoil the storyline a tad, but I hope they put him in for both accuracys sake – and because he is a blwydi legend of a player!
Anyway – Enjoy!

Brilliant! I cant wait for this to come out and I reckon that the mrs would even be up for watching it to!
“Forever Strong” is actually a pretty good movie, and the rugby scenes are decent as well. Given that no movie can capture sport very well, I don’t expect the rugby scenes to be terribly realistic for either Forever Strong” or for “Invictus”, so it’s best to grade them on the surrounding story. On that score, “Forever Strong” was very good. I watched it with my 10 year old and would recommend it to anyone with kids, not something you can say about very many movies now. Plus, it is loosely based upon actual events, which is always a plus.
Personally, I expect “Invictus” to be somewhat flat simply b/c the book was short on action and long on politics. It read like a litany of Mandella meeting one Boer after another with precious little insight into the Springbok team itself. The more true to the book the script is, the less rugby you will see. Plus, I cringe that Matt Damon is playing Pienaar not simply b/c he’s a shrimp in comparison but also because he’s a raving lefty politically and comes across even more idiotic than most actors at times. But, beggars can’t be choosers, so I’ll probably pay the $$ to see it in the theater.
@ Bobby nations….only a blind fool would think that forever strong is a good movie. It is probably the shittiest thing i eva saw…and ive seen some shitty things…(served in the british army for 8yrs)…had the opportunity to review invictus and although the action isnt that much…its definately a cut above the rest.
