Former Cardiff RFC skipper and WRU president LES SPENCE
Hi

There may be a few people out there who remember Les Spence, who was president of the WRU in the early 1970s and helped set up the '75 tour to Japan.

The reason Les wanted to make that trip to the Far East was that he had been a WW2 prisoner of war there - and he was very much in favour of reconciliation with former foes.

Throughout his captivity in Java, Singapore and Japan, Les kept a diary which has now been published in a new book, FROM JAVA TO NAGASAKI.

The 68,000-word diaries cover the period from January 1942 to November 1945. And as number 2 in one of the camps nearest Nagasaki, Les was able to record the dropping of the plutonium bomb.
“We had uneventful train journey to Nagasaki and then we saw the result of the atomic bomb. It was simply astounding, nothing left standing for miles, everything flat and burnt out.”

Les was a friend and fellow prisoner of Wilf Wooller and he records in great detail the football and rugby games the prisoners organised.

He also recalls Cardiff's famous victory in the pre-war Middlesex Sevens!

If anyone is interested, the hardback book is priced £16.99 and is published by Magic Rat Books (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login to view.). The ISBN number is 978-0-9562722-2-5.
