Darren Morris joins Cardiff Blues

Darren Morris joins Cardiff Blues on a 6 month contract

Ex-Wales and Worcester prop Darren Morris has joined the Cardiff Blues on a 6 month contract. He plays both sides of the scrum and is a very hard scrummager – strong and powerful. Lacks a bit in fitness (to say the least) but a useful player.

From Cardiff’s point of view this is a useful signing. Gary Powell is a long way from being what you would call a quality tighthead and I am yet to be convinced that the experiment with trying John Yapp there has worked at all – Darren Morris will prove a very useful addition to the propping ranks at the Leckwith.Darren Morris

Quite surprised to see that the Ospreys didn’t sign him up though. He’s a Swansea lad (played there for years), a former Welsh rugby international and they could really do with the cover whilst Adam Jones is out until the new year. Craig Mitchell has real potential but close to no experience, whilst Cai Griffiths has shown what he can to in fits and starts but has yet to put together any meaningful challenge to be a starting tighthead – even if Adam (one of the best tightheads in the world in my opinion) wasn’t ahead of him.

But the Blues fans should be happy at this. They get real cover in a problem position – plus the ability to have another loosehead for the EDF matches when Gethin and Yapp are both away on Welsh duty.

A good signing in my opinion.
